What is Mysore-Style?

Mysore-style Ashtanga is the way Ashtanga has been traditionally taught for over 100 years. It originated in Mysore, India by Sri. K. Patthabhi Jois and it is passed on by way of parampara. This means it is taught 1:1 from teacher to student in a group setting.

The Ashtanga Method is comprised of 6 set sequences that increase in difficulty. Each student learns from the beginning pose by pose, and each vinyasa/pose must be memorized by the student prior to more of the sequence being added.

Do I need any props?

No, as traditionally no props are used to get into or modify postures. I offer various modifications to students based on their individual needs. The goal is to allow the body to open and/or get stronger by using only the body, not props.

Do I need to know the sequence before I begin?

Definitly not. I will teach you from the beginning, one pose at a time, ensuring that you get all the guidance that you need to commit the sequence to your memory. I’ve created a Primary Series PDF which you can download for free at the bottom of this page. Ideally you can study it outside of class and then work from memory while in class.

The Mysore-style classes are 3 hours, will I need to be there for the entire time?

One benefit of the Mysore-style practice is that you can show up when it works for you, any time within the Mysore hours. If your practice is 45 minutes long, you can show up anytime between 6 and 8:15 to finish before 9am. You just sign on, start your practice and receive guidance as you move through the practice. If you’re brand new, allocate around 30-45 minutes for your first class so we can have time for you to learn the first few sequences.
